Moving to France

Make room for the details of your move to France.

Begin with the French town or area, your collection country and the belongings you plan to take. You can enquire before your dates or final address are settled.

A city apartment and a village house

An apartment enquiry should mention the floor, lift and space to unload. At a village or countryside property, check the approach, turning space and distance to the door. Ask the property contact which restrictions apply. A country-wide description cannot answer property-specific access questions.

If the property is not ready

Explain any gap between leaving your current home and getting access to the new one. Ask what arrangements can actually be offered, what happens if access changes and which additional costs need agreement. Storage or temporary holding should only form part of the plan when specifically confirmed.

Record what needs assessment

Identify large furniture, fragile pieces and items needing dismantling or specialist care. If a piece is unlikely to fit through a doorway or lift, say so early. Packing and placement instructions should form part of an agreed scope, rather than a general promise to handle everything.

Check your actual route

A move into France, a departure and a move from another European country can need different preparation. Tell us both endpoints. Confirm which current requirements apply to your belongings and who provides or checks the documents. Residence questions belong with the appropriate authority.

Check the current French requirements

For household belongings, consult French customs guidance on a transfer of residence where it applies to your route. British citizens can also start with GOV.UK's Living in France guidance. Residence and belongings requirements need separate checks for your circumstances.
