Moving to the UK guide

Moving to the UK guide

Whether you are returning to the UK or arriving for the first time, plan your belongings around the property you can actually use. Start with the collection country, your destination area and the dates that affect the handover.

Confirm the receiving property

Give the UK town and postcode when known. Ask about parking, unloading, stairs, lifts and restrictions on delivery hours. If keys or a tenancy date are not confirmed, explain that uncertainty. Tell us who can receive the belongings if you will not yet be at the property.

Review the collection arrangements abroad

Record the collection address, access and any date you must leave. Include a local contact if someone else will handle collection. Take useful photographs of awkward access or large furniture, and update the inventory if you decide to leave pieces behind.

Check current UK requirements

Use GOV.UK's guidance for moving personal belongings to the UK and check whether it applies to your route and destination. Do not assume that returning residents and first-time arrivals have identical circumstances. Ask who supplies and checks the paperwork; the enquiry itself does not establish eligibility for relief.

Agree delivery and unpacking separately

A UK delivery address alone does not describe the whole job. Mention room placement, unpacking or assembly if required, and check these tasks in the proposal. Keep arrival essentials accessible and confirm how delivery updates will be shared.

Your questions answered

Can I enquire before my UK postcode is known?

Yes. Give the destination area and explain that the address is provisional. Update it when confirmed so access and delivery can be assessed.

Does a UK return automatically qualify for customs relief?

No. Check the applicable official requirements for your circumstances and confirm the document responsibilities before collection.

Check the current UK requirements

Use GOV.UK's guidance on moving personal belongings to the UK and HMRC's transfer of residence guidance. Check the conditions for your circumstances and whether your home will be in Great Britain or Northern Ireland. Agree document responsibilities in your moving proposal.
